More malware on Swiss websites: SWITCH reports further increase
In 2012, more than 2,800 websites with addresses ending in .ch or .li were cleaned of "drive-by" code. SWITCH warns that malware represents the biggest threat to Internet users in 2013. The negative trend is continuing, with 25% more websites infected by malware in the first quarter of 2013.

SWITCH presents Junior Web Award: Imaginative projects submitted by young talent
Today for the seventh time, SWITCH honoured the best websites designed by Swiss school classes. At the award ceremony for the SWITCH Junior Web Award held at Kongresshaus Zürich, the young talent received rapturous applause and attractive prizes. The projects submitted impressed from a content and visual perspective, with this year's jury prize and first prize both going to a primary school class (year 5/6) from Uster.

SWITCH awarded this year's Honorary Award by the 'Best of Swiss Web' Association
Europe's oldest Web Award is presenting its Honorary Award 2013 to the SWITCH Foundation – and hence to an organisation for the first time rather than to an individual. At the 'Best of Swiss Web' Award Night being held in the Kongresshaus Zurich next Thursday, 21 March 2013, not only will the best Internet and mobile projects receive awards in front of an audience of 700, but the traditional Honorary Award will also be presented. This prize is generally awarded to persons who have rendered exceptional service to the development of the Internet and the ICT sector, such as through fundamental developments in the technical field or exceptional achievements as an entrepreneur, politician or researcher. For the 2013 Honorary Award, the jury has selected an organisation for the first time, rather than individuals. This year's Honorary Award is going to the SWITCH Foundation.

Focus on the world of Internet addresses at Domain pulse in Davos
At this year's Domain pulse specialist conference – a joint event staged by the registries for Germany (DENIC), Austria (nic.at) and Switzerland (SWITCH) – more than 200 Internet experts from Switzerland and abroad are meeting up in Davos on 18 and 19 February 2013. Domain pulse is the most important event on the subject of domain names in the German-speaking world and the annual industry get-together for domain experts. The conference provides an optimum opportunity for keeping up-to-date with social, political and economic topics from the world of domain names.

Domain pulse on 18 and 19 February 2013 in Davos
SWITCH is extending an invitation to the specialist "Domain pulse" conference – the most important event dedicated to domain names in the German-speaking world – which is being held in Davos on 18 and 19 February. Do the new endings like .swiss, .app or .shop mean that we are heading for a revolution in the web? In what way will the Internet change? At the World Conference on International Telecommunication (WCIT) in December 2012, a large number of Western countries refused to sign the agreement as a protest. Smartphones and tablets in children's hands
Swiss children and young people are finding it increasingly easy to make their way into the Internet thanks to mobile devices. Smartphones are already part of everyday life in primary schools. And one thing is reassuring: the results of the fourth SWITCH Junior Web Barometer confirm that there is a trend towards an increasingly careful approach to disclosing personal data in the web. For the fourth time running, the online SWITCH Junior Web Barometer study took the pulse of Switzerland's children and young people in matters of Internet consumption and social media.

".ch" survives DDoS attack unscathed
Since this morning (Thursday) all the Swiss name servers have been systematically abused in a bid to stop other websites from operating. "Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS)" attacks are nothing new, but this is the first time that the .ch infrastructure has been abused. Thanks to the high-quality operation of Switzerland's Internet by the SWITCH Foundation and SWITCH's rapid intervention, all .ch websites have remained accessible all the time.

Liechtenstein Internet addresses are "moving home"
Up until now, it has been possible to register Internet addresses with the ending .li either directly with SWITCH or with one of more than 60 recognised Partners of SWITCH. As of 14 February 2013, SWITCH is withdrawing from its direct customer business with .li domain names and transferring this to its Partners. In future, the Internet Service Providers will be offering the registration and administration of domain names for direct customers in their own name and for their own account.

The "Microsoft Education Alliance Agreement" that SWITCH and Microsoft have recently signed benefits the entire Swiss university community. It includes the promotion of ICT, as well as a central framework agreement for software licences, and also leads to cost savings.

SWITCH celebrates its 25th anniversary
The SWITCH Foundation is looking back on the first 25 years of its existence today. As a partner to the universities, SWITCH develops services for researchers, lecturers and students which strengthen Switzerland as a research location and contribute towards networking the universities. Projects for the younger generation and the development of an e-identity are pointing the way to the future for sustainable Internet services.

SWITCH Junior Web Award 2013: young web talents sought
The website competition for school classes is starting for the seventh time round today. SWITCH is looking for school classes from all over Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein who, together with their teachers, would like to explore the World Wide Web and design a website of their own. The Junior Web Award success story began in 2007 when SWITCH launched the competition on the occasion of its 20th anniversary. The aim is to promote the Internet and media competence of young people. More than 2000 school classes have entered the competition since then.
