The website competition for school classes is meeting with a high level of interest in all four language regions of Switzerland. Today, it is being launched for the fifth time round. The competition is aimed at teachers interested in designing a website with their class.

The Junior Web Award success story began in 2007 when SWITCH launched the competition within the framework of its 20-year anniversary. The aim is to promote the internet and media competence of the younger generation. More than 1500 school classes have entered the competition so far, with a third of these submitting a completed web project. Last year, the competition achieved a record with 153 completed projects.

Schoolchildren design websites
The school classes can design and publish a website of their own, free of charge and without any programming knowledge. The competition is open to all school classes from Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein at the levels of primary school, secondary school I and secondary school II. After registering on the website www.JuniorWebAward.ch, the teachers and pupils are sent documents familiarising them with the subject of the web. The classes then work independently on compiling a website of their choice. The completed websites must be submitted by 15 March 2011. After this, the public have the opportunity to cast their votes, and the websites are then assessed by a professional jury. The winning classes receive their awards at a prize-giving ceremony held at the end of May 2011.

Established throughout Switzerland
The classes taking part come from all the different language regions – from Lugano, via Poschiavo, right through to St. Gallen and Lausanne. The majority of projects come from the Canton of Berne (92 projects), followed by Aargau (62 projects) and Basel Land (50 projects). "We hope that, for the fifth anniversary of the competition, we will also be able to attract classes from the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Glarus and Uri", says Séverine Manini, project manager of the SWITCH Junior Web Award. So far, only very few websites have been submitted from these cantons.
