SWITCH successful in court

June 11, 2010 / Marco D'Alessandro

Ten eminent hosting providers have been attempting for many months to prevent the market entry of switchplus – the subsidiary of SWITCH. A stop has now been put to this. The Commercial Court has lifted the precautionary ruling concerning the website switch.ch.

In the autumn of 2009, the big hosting providers took exception to the market entry of switchplus. Although SWITCH was ready to engage in discussions on this matter, the providers opted to take legal action. They obtained an immediately enforceable ruling (superprovisorische Verfügung) at the commercial court. This has been seen to be untenable and has been lifted with immediate effect. “We welcome this logical decision. This makes us stronger when it comes to developing reliable internet services for our customers”, says Wolfram Schmidt, Managing Director of switchplus.

switchplus is in a position to fulfil a wish that has been voiced by customers for many years. It offers services that SWITCH is unable to offer within its regulated activity: the registration of domain names and one-stop web and mail hosting.

About SWITCH
SWITCH established the internet in Switzerland, as a non-profit organisation and pioneer. As the internet service provider for the Swiss universities and the public at large, SWITCH develops innovative solutions and thus simplifies digital life in Switzerland.

About switchplus
switchplus is a 100% subsidiary of the SWITCH Foundation. Many of SWITCH’s domain customers have been asking SWITCH for many years to provide hosting services too. With switchplus, it has become possible to offer domain and hosting services from a single source. Since SWITCH’s state-regulated activity as the registry for domain names only runs until 2015, SWITCH is making a key contribution to securing its own future with switchplus.
