The website competition for school classes is starting for the seventh time round today. SWITCH is looking for school classes from all over Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein who, together with their teachers, would like to explore the World Wide Web and design a website of their own.
The Junior Web Award success story began in 2007 when SWITCH launched the competition on the occasion of its 20th anniversary. The aim is to promote the Internet and media competence of young people. More than 2000 school classes have entered the competition since then.
Schoolchildren design their own website
The school classes taking part can design and publish a website of their own free of charge and without any programming knowledge. In the process, they practice working with state-of-the-art communication technologies, adopting a playful approach. Whether humorous, with a learning effect or highly individualised – the school classes decide on a topic together and on how they are going to implement it in the Internet. As Switzerland's Internet pioneer, SWITCH wishes to promote knowledge of the World Wide Web and familiarity with this medium amongst young people. The generation of tomorrow ought to have the opportunity to work with modern technologies. The competition is open as of now to all school classes from Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein at the primary school, secondary school I and secondary school II levels.
Easy participation – exciting projects
After participating classes have registered at www.juniorwebaward.ch, SWITCH accompanies the classes and their teachers with information material and offers them two CMS programs for designing the website. The classes can learn about the subject of the web and then compile a website by themselves on a topic of their choice. The deadline for submitting the projects is 13 March 2013. This is followed by a public voting session, plus an assessment of the websites by a professional jury. Awards are made to the best three projects in the three age categories of primary level, secondary level I and secondary level II. The winning classes will have their awards presented to them on 23 May in the "Kongresshaus". The ceremony will be hosted by Katja Reichenstein.
