SWITCH has been playing a key role in Switzerland for twenty-five years as an Internet pioneer and centre of competence in providing services for the Swiss universities.
We interconnect education and science
Back in the 1980s, SWITCH was one of the very first organisations in Switzerland to develop and promote the Internet throughout the whole country. Furthermore, we have remained the first right up until the present when it comes to offering the universities in our country precisely those network-based, high-value services that they need for education and research.
We preserve the interests of the Swiss universities
We set things up for the Swiss universities so that they remain on the ball internationally. We do that through SWITCHlan, which provides them with direct access to one another, to the Internet and to the research networks around the world. SWITCH is an active participant in worldwide research programmes and also in projects run by the European Union. In doing this, we actively assume the role of guardians of Switzerland's interests in key international bodies, such as TERENA and DANTE, as well as in numerous projects run by the European Union.
We are proud of our national and international achievements
In many fields, SWITCH is one of the world's leaders. This applies, in particular, to identity management, high-performance networks and network security. Our information and communication technologies are characterised by high quality and longevity. They are much appreciated not only by the universities but by businesses through Switzerland too.
We administer .ch- and .li domain names
Even outside the academic world SWITCH has been providing valuable services for everyone since the very beginning of the Internet: as the registry for all country-code Internet domain names registered in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. We ensure that all domain names ending in .ch or .li are correctly issued and administered.
