SWITCHconnect Classic

SWITCHconnect Classic was the first roaming solution available in Switzerland. Today, every university and most of the universities of applied sciences are participating. The principle is quite simple. Every institution offers a publicly available non-encrypted wireless network, called the docking network. Users are able to connect to this wireless network. But this network offers no connectivity to the outside world (e.g. the Internet) except to the VPN gateways of the other institutions.
The list of VPN gateways is called the SWITCHconnect ACL and is maintained by SWITCH. The list is published at the following URLs:

The docking networks are usually wireless LANs with the SSID "public". At some locations you may find networks called "public institution". Some organisations also offer wired docking networks where you can connect your laptop by using an Ethernet cable.
