What is involved here is a project which is setting out to provide support for internet researchers, in particular. SWITCH is one of the co-founders of FEDERICA.

Radio networks for research
Many geographically remote research stations around the globe have one thing in common: they lack a reliable Internet connection. SWITCH has launched a project with three Swiss partners here which provides an inexpensive remedy: mobile wireless-LAN devices at different locations that link up to form a "mesh" network. Thus, the data is transmitted securely and flexibly.
