You are interested in a better understanding of your students and become aware of what is happening in your distance classes? This graphical interactive student monitoring and tracking system tool extracts tracking data and generates graphical representations - now also for the Moodle version 1.9.
GISMO is a graphical interactive monitoring tool that provides useful visualization of students'
activities in online courses to instructors. With GISMO instructors can examine various aspects of
distance students, such as the attendance to courses, reading of materials, submission of assignments.
Users of the popular learning management system Moodle may benefit from GISMO for their teaching activities. With respect to the standard reports provided by Moodle (which basically allow teachers to see if an individual student has viewed a specific resource or participated on a specific activity on a specific day), GISMO provides comprehensive visualizations that gives an overview of the whole class, not only a specific student or a particular resource.
With GISMO, instructors can perform analysis of the whole class, and may have a "clear picture" of what the class is doing, or has done in a period in the past.
Download here the GISMO 2.0 plug-in for Moodle 1.9.x.
This new version (2.0) of the tool introduces significant improvements:
- it now works with the most recent version of Moodle (1.9.x),
GISMO was implemented in 2004 in the context of an European Union funded project "Edukalibre,
Libre Sofware Methods for E-Education", was based on Java technology, and released as Free Software.
The old version of the software worked only with versions 1.5.x and 1.6.x of Moodle, whilst current version of Moodle is 1.9.3. Moreover, it needed a browser capable of running Java applets (v. 1.4.x) to see the visualizations before.
Since its first release in December 2004, the software has been downloaded 2700 times and the sourceforge.net page has been visited more than 17'000 times. We regularly receive requests for all over the world about the new release of the software for the latest version of Moodle.
The new version of the software will be beneficial for a high number of instructors and institutions that consider GISMO a tool useful for their eLearning activities.
