e-Identity Management
SWITCH is developing a trusted framework for life long e-identity management. This covers the following aspects:
Life Long Electronic Identity
An e-identity management framework is based on persitent life long ID, that is unambiguously bound to a specific individual. We are evaluating the existing governmental and non-governmental initiatives for persistent IDs, and we will implement the most promising approach for the academic community. Critical aspects are the level of assurance (LoA) of the identity, and the level of confidence of the associated attributes.
Account linking/mapping
Today, a personal identity on the internet is either limited to episodes in an individual's life (studies at a university, employment at a company), or bound to web services (contributing to blogs, media sharing platforms, wikis). We are working on an approach to link these online identities together, declaring them as belonging to the same person.
Authentication
Authentication (= "logging in") should be simple, safe and reliable for both - the user and the service provider. In particular, it is desirable that an individual can re-use the same authentication mechanism for multiple online services.
Attributes
Attributes are claims about the individual using a more or less standardized vocabulary. Examples are: Age, home and email address, phone number, current affiliation, academic degree etc. Attributes can have a varying level of trust. They can be self-declared by the individual, or signed (certified) by institutions or other individuals.
Attributes carry a number of critical information about an indivual. Is is a crucial requirement, that an individual is in full control of it's attributes at any time. A person decides what information is released to who for what period of time.
