Domain Name Service (DNS)

The SWITCHlan group provides configuration and operational support for DNS to our member organisations. In addition, we operate several DNS name servers ourselves, including the primary and a secondary server for the CH and LI domains, name servers for our own domains, as well as secondary servers for many of our customers and partner networks.

Technical Tips

Exchange DNS Secondaries

According to the recommendations of RFC 2182: "Selection and Operation of Secondary DNS Servers", every important DNS zone should be served by multiple servers at different points of the Internet, in order to reduce the risk of the information becoming unavailable in situations of network failures.

We encourage our member organisations to exchange secondary name service between each other, and will provide assistance with this. If you wish to set up a secondary DNS server at another site, and don't know a good partner site, please contact us.

Other Sources of Information

An excellent repository of information about DNS and BIND is the DNS Resources Directory. For those who prefer to read books, DNS and BIND by Paul Albitz and Cricket Liu deals with this topic in a comprehensive way. We also maintain a list of DNS-related references on this server.
