Network Time Protocol (NTP)
The Network Time Protocol allows the synchronization of computer clocks over TCP/IP networks such as the Internet. SWITCH uses NTP internally to keep the clocks of our routers and servers in synchronization. Having a common view of time on the network makes many things easier, from correlating log files from different machines to keeping file timestamps consistent when using a distributed file service such as NFS.
If your site is connected to SWITCH, you can use your access router as an NTP time source for your network. For access details, please contact us at <noc@switch.ch>.
Please note that SWITCH does not provide NTP service to the general public. If this is what you are looking for, please check the list of public stratum 1 and 2 NTP servers . An interesting alternative is provided by pool.ntp.org. General information about the network time protocol can be found on the NTP web site.
