SWITCHsms – more than meets the eye!
With SWITCHsms, you are not limited to sending SMSs. You can also use this service to transmit fax and pager messages – quickly and reliably.
What do I have to do?
To transmit an SMS, fax or pager message, simply send an e-mail to an e-mail address of your choice. This address must be structured in accordance with the following pattern:
<Recipient's number>@<service>.switch.ch.
Instead of <service> you must use one of the three words "sms", "fax" or "pager" to have your message routed via the appropriate medium.
What if I want to use a browser?
We offer you the option of sending your SMS from a browser. This is a variant that contains additional functions as well as just sending SMSs – for example administering the numbers of your recipients in an address book. Moreover, the SMSs sent are automatically saved too, so that you can view their contents again later on. One further advantage is that any message that is more than 160 characters long is automatically split into several SMSs.
Who's this service for?
All students and employees of one of the Swiss universities can use SWITCHsms. The only precondition is that your home organisation must be connected up to SWITCH's network.
What does it cost?
This is a service for which SWITCH levies a charge by invoicing each university according to consumption. It is then up to the university concerned to decide whether or not to make this service available free to its students or to charge them for it. You will find a table of charges in our FAQs.
