Send an e-mail, receive a fax
How does it work?
Use the recipient's fax number and add "@fax.switch.ch". You can send your e-mail to this address.
Example: If the fax number is 044 123 45 67, then the address to mail to is 0441234567@fax.switch.ch.
Restrictions and hints
- Special characters: Note that special characters like the plus sign "+" are not allowed in the address of the e-mail.
- Only plain text is accepted in the main part of the e-mail. In particular, HTML-formatted messages will be rejected. If you want to send an e-mail with special characters, you may want to check proper reception with your own fax machine first.
- Attachments: It is quite common to attach a document which will then be printed out at the receiving fax machine. The following types of documents may be attached:
.doc Microsoft Word
.xls Microsoft Excel
.ppt Microsoft Powerpoint
.pdf Adobe Acrobat
.ps Adobe Postscript - Notification: You may want to get notified on success or failure of the transmission. You can turn on notification by specifying the Reply-To field in your e-mail. Please bear in mind that the notification only informs you whether the message could be delivered to the provider. Usually, this is equivalent to whether the fax has arrived at the destination.
- Non-delivery: In case of non-delivery, the system tries to send a notification back to the sender specified in the "Reply-To" field of the e-mail. Reasons for non-delivery include:
- The size of the e-mail exceeded 2MB which is the maximal size allowed.
- The sender is not allowed to use this service.
- The message contains some unsupported text encoding like e.g. HTML.
- ...
- Support may be given by your local postmaster. He will be able to find out quickly whether the problem is a local one. If not, he may also contact the SWITCH postmaster.
