A win for the whole of Switzerland

Winning the tender for the registry vindicates SWITCH’s many years of hard work in ensuring the security and stability of .ch and .li.

Published on 02.09.2016

It was announced on 1 September that SWITCH will continue to operate the registry on behalf of the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) for at least another five years from 2017. SWITCH’s proposal stood out from the international competition, in particular thanks to a proven concept for fighting cybercrime.

"SWITCH won this tender with an outstanding proposal and a far-sighted strategy. This means that the Office for Communications, as the supervisory authority for the top-level domain .li, can continue its long-standing and successful cooperation with SWITCH."

Kurt Bühler, director Office for Communications of the Principality of Liechtenstein

Taking action against cybercrime

SWITCH brought the Internet to Switzerland almost 30 years ago and has since enjoyed great success in building up and operating the registry for .ch domain names. These days, the top-level domain .ch is officially recognised as a critical infrastructure by the Federal Council. In addition to its role as Switzerland’s Internet pioneer, SWITCH has also led the way internationally in the fight against cybercrime. It was the first registry to begin taking decisive action against the distribution of malicious software and the theft of personal login details for online services. The whole of Switzerland and Liechtenstein benefits from SWITCH’s specialist know-how and vast experience. Studies confirm that domain names ending in .ch and .li are among the most secure in the world.

Everyone benefits

As a partner of the Swiss universities, SWITCH provides stable ICT services with high levels of availability. A secure Internet in Switzerland thus strengthens Switzerland’s position as a centre of research. Given its dual role as registry and partner of the universities, all of SWITCH’s clients – the universities, the Internet industry and the banking sector – have always benefited from its wealth of experience. The academic community welcomes the opportunity to build on this solid basis going forward, and various comments made following the announcement show a certain degree of relief:

"This excellent news means recognition for the hard work SWITCH does, a vote of confidence and, it must be said, a huge weight lifted from our shoulders,"
– said Valérie Clerc, member of SWITCH’s Foundation Council and Managing Director of the Swiss University Conference (SUC).

"swissuniversities is happy that SWITCH will operate the registry for the top-level domain .ch for five more years. This recognizes the quality of the IT service provider of the Swiss Universities and guarantees its beneficiaries an optimal strategic positioning. The Rectors' Conference would like to congratulate the SWITCH team for this great success."
– Dr. Axel Marion, Head of the "Higher Education Policy" division, swissuniversities and member of the SWITCH Foundation Committee

– Jeannette Frey, member of the Foundation Council and representative of the Cantonal and University Library (BCU) in Lausanne, was full of praise: “(...) My most heartfelt congratulations to the SWITCH team for winning the public tender for .ch in the face of some very tough competition. Well done, and all the best for the future in this vital role."

"Congratulations, it's a wise decision from the Swiss government to choose your expertise, experience and business continuity in a secure way. We wish you success in the continuation of what you are already doing!"
