Roadmap and Current Activities

The edu-ID team would like to inform the community and users of edu-ID transparently about current activities and long-term planning. The activities mentioned are not exhaustive and we are open to further suggestions from the Swiss university community.

Current Tasks

  • Passwordless login with passkeys
Ready for introduction at universities in Q1 2024.
  • MFA policy
With this feature universities will be able to enforce strong authentication for their members. It will furthermore be possible to define allowed 2nd factor authentication methods. Available by end of Q1 2024.
  • New user interface for account management
The account management https://eduid.ch is being completely overhauled and given a fresh design. In intensive collaboration with UX specialists, we will be able to provide an easy-to-use account management system from Q2 2024.
  • Improved account recovery and de-duplication
Edu-ID users who have lost their 2-step login access or those who create duplicate accounts cause high support costs. From Q1 2024, additional account data will gradually be collected from users, allowing us to automate recovery and de-duplication processes.
  • Anomaly detection
From Q3 2024, risk-based authentication mechanisms will be gradually implemented. The methods are based on the evaluation of geolocation, device detection and the services visited.

Topics further ahead

  • Extend Support for OpenID Connect
Add Classic Attribute Model support of OIDC.

Strategic Directions

  • Support Digitization Initiatives at Universities
Additional services around the identity of a student, e.g. digital signatures, diplomas, digital documents etc.
  • Extend Federation Footprint
Increase number of participating organizations, services and users
  • Maintain Governance by Swiss universities
Implement new requirements from the higher education community.
  • Maintain High Security and Data-Protection Standards
Data protection is a core value of our service. As a non-profit foundation, we are an important trust anchor of the Swiss IT landscape.
