Linked Archival Ontology and Pipeline

Converting metadata into Linked Open Data.

In this Innovation Lab, the University of Applied Sciences Grisons FHGR developed a method to convert metadata from the Patrinum Archive of the Bibliothèque Cantonale et Universitaire Lausanne BCUL into Linked Open Data. This way, metadata is much easier to discover and reuse. The FHGR converted the Patrinum data from MARCXML into the Records in Contexts (RiC) metadata schema, which serves as an intermediary format for archives and libraries. In a second step, the university automatically converted the data into RESCS, the data model of SWITCH’s Research Data Connectome project. The solution developed in the Innovation Lab is flexibly configurable so that in future it will be possible to transfer metadata from other archives and libraries to the Connectome infrastructure.

This SWITCH Innovation Lab helps to better link Open Data in libraries and archives. That's crucial for future research.

Tobias Wildi, Lecturer for Archival Science, University of Applied Sciences Grisons FHGR

The work of SWITCH and FHGR helped to better structure the Patrinum data, convert it into the most modern metadata format and make it accessible on the web. The BCUL is thrilled about the potential it offers for future applications. For example, it will be possible to create new services by linking and enriching BCUL data with data from other institutions.
