Ticket Description: Fiber break between Zurich and Basel

Problem Description:

Since 13:48 today, one single fiber of our backbone fiber link between Zurich and Basel is broken. OTDR measurements from both sides indicate a problem in front of Equinix Zurich. At this point, the fibers between SBB and euNetworks (former Fibrelac) are spliced together. We're currently investigating. There's no impact on customer services at this moment.

We learned afterwards from euNetworks about a a site survey of the splice box at about the same time when our link went down.
Unfortunately this information was not already provided on our first request - shortly after the detection of the interruption.

euNetwork spliced the broken fiber in the splice box of their manhole in front of Equinix Zürich.
OTDR measurements of SWITCH confirmed the success of the repair. The link is up again.

We got a call from euNetworks.
They will send a maintenance team to check the fibers in the vicinity of Equinix Zürich.

A more precise measurement to localize the exact position of the fiber break failed as the fibers were not accessible on connectors as expected. Physical inspection of the area showed heavy construction activity, a lot of open trenches, but no obviously damaged cables or tubes. There was no visible construction work directly around the splicing box, and no traces of physical damage to the manhole itself. We will ask the fiber providers EUnetworks and SBB to start fault localization and repair work.
