Ticket Description: Scheduled reboot of Zurich border router swiIX1.switch.ch
Scheduled Starttime: Scheduled Endtime:

Problem Description:

Our router swiIX1.switch.ch at Equinix (formerly IXEurope) Zurich 1 has developed a problem that we believe is due to a bug in the system software. The problem doesn't seem to impact the forwarding of traffic, but causes partial loss of accounting information (Netflow). The supplier has been informed about the problem in October 2007 and is still diagnosing it.

Router swiIX1 is up again. BGP-4 peerings came up, and it is now carrying more than 1 Gb/s of traffic again. Netflow accounting data is received for all interfaces.

Initiated reboot sequence.

2008-02-27 00:01
Temporarily shut down all external BGP-4 sessions. Verified that traffic is re-routed through CERN.

The router will be rebooted tonight.

In order to restore full Netflow accounting information, we have to reinitialize the card. Because this will drastically reduce connectivity to the backbone, we have to do this at night while traffic levels are lower. So we will take the opportunity to upgrade to a slightly newer system software version.

Traffic should be rerouted through other paths, notably our other external connections at CERN in Geneva.
