Ticket Number: 20151021_3Ticket State: CLOSED
Ticket Opened: 2015-10-21 17:14Ticket Closed: 2015-10-28 12:08
Ticket Description: Outage in the Geneva and Lausanne area

Problem Description:

Yesterday, we performed some hardware maintenance work at CERN in order to prepare the optical layer for the next deployment of our ALPSTEIN project. During this work, our backbone router swiEL2 in Lausanne crashed most likely as a side effect of the maintenance work. As swiEL2 was used as backup path for the University of Geneva during these works, the crash lead to a total loss of connectivity for the University of Geneva and all organisations indirectly connected (HUG-GE, HES-SO). For all organisations in the Lausanne area, the reload of swiEL2 lead to no more redundancy for about five minutes. During this time, all traffic was routed via the respective backup paths. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused.

We already took measures to improve the resilience in the city of Geneva by adjusting the routing configuration within the local city network. Further, the next deployment of our ALPSTEIN project will significantly improve resilience for the Geneva and Lausanne area by adding a new link from Geneva to Fribourg via Orbe.
