Ticket 20201209_1

Ticket Number: 20201209_1Ticket State: CLOSED
Ticket Opened: 2020-12-09 11:28Ticket Closed: 2020-12-11 20:55
Ticket Description: Scheduled dismantling of old backbone router swiEL1 (10./11.12.2020)
Scheduled Starttime: 2020-12-09 11:28:00Scheduled Endtime: 2020-12-09 11:28:00

Problem Description:

Now that most connections have been moved to our new router swiEL3, we will proceed to decommission the older router swiEL1. This will free up rack space and significantly reduce our power consumption in the EPFL data center.

The plan:

10.12.2020: move the last remaining backbone link (to swiGE3 in Geneva) from swiEL1 to swiEL3
11.12.2020: physically remove the router from the rack and transport it back to Zurich

We will proactively route traffic away from the link before disconnecting it to avoid any noticeable impact on customer traffic. Leaving the router running for a while "on a stick" (it will still be connected to swiEL3) will permit us to verify that there are no hidden dependencies on it from elsewhere in the network, before we turn it off for good.

Affected:

From 2020-12-11 09:00 until 2020-12-11 15:00
Impact: no impact
Service: network access
Sites: EPFL

Expect some vibrations as we remove ~150kg of router from the racks :-) Shouldn't have any impact on traffic though.

Actions:

The old router swiEL1 was turned off, dismantled, and transported to Zurich. Many thanks to Philippe Gagnon for the help!

The last remaining backbone link was rehomed from swiEL1 to swiEL3. The old router is free from user traffic now. We still need to do some cleanup and configuration on the management network before we can turn it off.
