Ticket Description: Fiber incident between Kreuzlingen and Gossau (18.09.2023)

Problem Description:

Starting from 8:45 this morning we have seen increasing fiber attenuation on the section of our backbone between Kreuzlingen and Gossau. At this time our most OSNR sensitive backbone link failed.

At about 9:00 the attenuation got even worse, and even the more robust 10Gb/s links went down.

Now only the optical supervisory channel is still running so we know the fibers are still connected, but likely under physical stress. We are contacting the fiber provider to rectify the situation. In the meantime redundancy in our north-eastern ring is lost.

Affected:

From 2023-09-18 08:45 until undefined
Impact: no more redundancy
Service: network access
Sites: OST-BU, OST-SG, PHTG, UNISG

From 2023-09-18 08:45 until undefined
Impact: no more redundancy
Service: P2P/OPN
Sites: EmpaEawag-SGE, L2VPN-OST-BU, L2VPN-OST-SG, OST-Waldau-bu1-go2, OST-Waldau-bu2-fhsg2

Actions:

2023-09-22 15:04
The fiber provider has informed us that the connection had been spliced. We see good optical values and the links for redundancy are restored.

2023-09-22 09:01
A new cable has been put in place crossing the construction site. Splicing work and link restoration is planned for today.

2023-09-19 16:15
A cable section next to the railway station has been damaged and needs to be replaced. The fiber provider claims a repair date of Friday Sep 22.

2023-09-18 17:49
Measurements confirmed that the issue was local to Kreuzlingen, between PHTG and the trains station "Hafen" where roadworks are ongoing.

The local provider is informed and will replace the section of cabling in cooperation with SBB for building entry.

We expect this type of repair to take around 2 days, but we do not have an official estimate from the provider yet.

2023-09-18 13:33
Contact with fiber providers and local contacts at the endpoints has not been enough to establish the location of the issue. We are en route to Kreuzlingen to perform OTDR measurements to find out more.
