"Scale up your research to the next level of infrastructure and services." This was the motto of this year's IT for Research Day, which took place on 21 June at the SwissTech Convention Center at the EPFL Lausanne. The focus was the SCALE-UP project, which SWITCH is running with nine project partners from Swiss universities within the framework of swissuniversities’ Scientific Information (P-5) programme. SCALE-UP comprises a range of projects, including tools for the analysis of big data, the provision of large-scale data storage, virtual private clouds, and much more.
Following the opening by Edouard Bugnion (Vice-President and CIO, EPFL), prominent experts such as Roland Dietlicher, Pierre-Yves Burgi, Hugues Cazeaux, Sergio Mafioletti, Olivier Verscheure, Sofiane Sarni, Dirk Engelke, Vittoria Rezzonico, Sigve Haug and Alain Dufaux presented a comprehensive programme that showcased the broad spectrum of academic applications possible with SWITCHengines, from projects all the way up to national services. SWITCHengines offers a flexible storage and computing solution optimally tailored to the specific needs of Swiss universities.
This event also served as a means of connecting the various P-5 projects with the scientific community at Swiss universities thanks to the high level of interest and diverse range of participants – around 100 researchers, teachers, librarians and education policy representatives attended the day.
