More than 100 researchers, academic IT specialists, librarians, lecturers and education policy representatives took part in the IT for Research Day 2018. The focus was the conclusion of the SCALE-UP project, which SWITCH set up together with nine project partners from Swiss universities within the framework of swissuniversities’ Scientific Information (P-5) programme. SCALE-UP comprised a range of projects, including tools for the analysis of big data, the provision of large-scale data storage, virtual private clouds, and much more.

Following the opening by Prof. Dr. Christiane Tretter, Director of the Mathematical Institute and Science IT Support, there was a welcome and update on the Scientific Information programme by Prof. Dr. Kilian Stoffel, president of swissuniversities’ Scientific Information steering committee, and Dr. Andreas Dudler, managing director of SWITCH.

Prominent experts presented a comprehensive review of their work that showcased the broad spectrum of academic applications possible with SWITCHengines, from projects all the way up to national services in the areas of:

  • Scientific support
  • Life sciences
  • Long-term storage
  • eLearning platforms
  • Data lifecycle management
  • Digital humanities
  • Social sciences
  • High-end teaching
  • Data science

For these and many other use cases, SWITCHengines offers a flexible storage and computing solution optimally tailored to the specific needs of Swiss universities.

This event also served as a means of connecting the various P-5 projects with the scientific community at Swiss universities – thanks to the high level of interest and diverse backgrounds of all the participants.
