Its security exceeds typical commercial hotspots by far. eduroam provides end-to-end encryption to ensure that your private user credentials are only visible to your home institution. The certificate of your home server is the only point you need to trust.
Institutions and hotspot providers can choose from a variety of ways to participate - whatever suits their personal situation. Set up your own infrastructure, use a managed Identity Provider service, or outsource the Identity Provider to Switch. Plus, you have the option to leverage the Switch edu-ID to issue eduroam credentials.
