A milestone for digital mobility in the Swiss Education Area

The adoption of the new Federal Act on Electronic Identification Services (e-ID Act) is a decisive step for Switzerland's digital future. It lays the foundation for trustworthy digital identities that can also be used in the education sector. Switch welcomes this outcome and will link the e-ID with Switch edu-ID in future to enable seamless, secure and internationally compatible educational pathways.

On 28 September 2025, Swiss voters approved the e-ID Act. As soon as the government e-ID is available, Switch will work with Educa to integrate it into the digital identity framework for education.

The e-ID as a foundation

Switch became actively involved in the participation process at an early stage and represented the perspective of the education sector. A key concern was the international interoperability of the solution, particularly with regard to the European Union's e-ID projects. Education and research are internationally networked. Swiss identity solutions must therefore be seamlessly integrated into this ecosystem.

Interaction between e-ID and Switch edu-ID

The Switch edu-ID is established in higher education as a lifelong digital identity. With the introduction of the state electronic identity, Switch will use the e-ID for the secure identification of Switch edu-ID users. This increases trustworthiness and prevents media breaks. In addition, the Swiyu digital wallet will store educational certificates in the future. The DVS project 'Digital Maturity Certificate' aims to lay the foundations for issuing certificates securely in digital form and making them available across all levels of education.

Digital mobility as a target vision

Digital mobility means being able to seamlessly design educational biographies across all levels – from nursery school to university to continuing education. The combination of e-ID and Switch edu-ID creates the basis for this. In close cooperation with Educa and its identity service Edulog, Switch wants to make these solutions available for the entire educational sector. At the same time, Switch is involved in international activities to ensure compatibility with European e-ID projects.

The adoption of the e-ID Act is an important step for Switzerland's digital sovereignty – and a boost for the education sector. The combination of e-ID and Switch edu-ID creates a trustworthy, interoperable infrastructure that supports lifelong learning and enables digital mobility.
