Switch to continue managing the .ch internet domain
The Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM) has decided to continue working with the Switch foundation to manage the .ch internet domain extension. Operational continuity, security requirements and satisfaction among market participants led OFCOM to redelegate the registry function to Switch. The new contract enters into force on 1 January 2027.

As an internet domain registry, Switch is responsible for the technical and administrative management of the .ch domain extension. Several factors underpin the renewal of its mandate, which expires at the end of 2026. Firstly, OFCOM recognises the fundamental importance of continuous, secure and robust management of the .ch domain extension, as this directly affects the availability, security and reliability of all digital services based on .ch addresses and therefore public, business and government confidence in digital Switzerland. Secondly, a survey OFCOM conducted in March 2025 among stakeholders in the Swiss domain name sector showed high satisfaction with the services Switch provides under its service mandate and revealed no opposition to continuing the collaboration.
On this basis, and in accordance with the Telecommunications Act, OFCOM has decided to delegate the .ch registry function directly to Switch. This approach ensures continuity in managing domain names while avoiding the additional costs, instability and delays in the management of .ch in the event of a transfer of operations.
The contract runs for an initial five-year term and is renewable once. The delegated tasks remain virtually unchanged, though OFCOM has made minor adjustments to the service catalogue to strengthen .ch domain security and the fight against cybercrime.
Delegation of the registry function
Switch has operated the .ch domain extension as registry since 2003 on behalf of the Swiss Confederation, managing the national database of .ch domain names and the electronic link to the global Domain Name System (DNS). Its registry function does not permit it to sell .ch web addresses directly to end customers.
Following a public tender in 2016, Switch was awarded a five-year mandate (2017–2021). Under the contract, this mandate was extended for five years until 2026. During this period, Switch strengthened its security and anti-cybercrime measures, helping position the .ch domain among the most secure in Europe.
