Switch Cloud security independently verified
As more services move to Switch Cloud, and universities increasingly rely on cloud services for critical workloads, Switch Cloud has earned ISO/IEC 27001 certification. This means the platform meets the formal requirements institutions request when entrusting their data to a cloud provider.
Swiss universities and research institutions are running a wide variety of critical workloads in the cloud. These range from research data management and identity services to streaming and video platforms, managed databases and collaboration tools. The most recent additions to Switch Cloud are managed PostgreSQL services with Servala.
Ongoing investments in Switch Cloud
As these workloads grow, so do the requirements on the underlying infrastructure. Institutions request the highest standards of security, guaranteed access and control over their data, clarity on applicable jurisdiction and a say in how the platform is governed. Switch Cloud continues to evolve to meet these requirements.
ISO/IEC 27001 independently confirms these efforts. The Swiss Safety Center has certified that Switch Cloud operates according to internationally recognised information security standards. The certification covers the operation of all services across Switch's data centres, as well as the development and sales of cloud-based IT solutions for the Swiss research and education sector.
A cloud for the community
This is a milestone that further enhances the digital sovereignty of Swiss education and research – not by itself, but as one building block alongside others. In addition to Swiss data residency, full data and access control, and Swiss jurisdiction, Switch Cloud stands out as a community cloud rather than a commercial one. Universities are part of the governance structure through their representation on the Switch Foundation Council and have a say in the direction of their common cloud platform.
